SQUIRREL’S NEST

DESIGN COMPETITION, 2021

The Squirrel’s Nest envisions an A-frame home on a 50-acre wooded lot in northern Vermont with minimal disturbance to the natural environment. The theoretical site currently lacks on-site water and septic facilities, and access is limited to abandoned logging roads and RV tracks. The design brief centered on conservation of all but two acres, limiting development within a designated area to preserve the wilderness. The A-frame design, known for its simplicity and weather resistance, was optimized for off-site prefabrication to reduce construction impact and expedite the process. High-efficiency materials and systems were employed to enable the home to operate independently of existing infrastructure, incorporating self-sustaining power, water, and wastewater solutions to suit the remote location.
